A motorcycle may not be as big as the typical car on the road, but that doesn’t mean it’s easier to ship across the country. As a motorcycle owner, you still have to go through the steps to prepare it for shipping day. If you’re just getting started with this task, the information below can help you prepare.
Finding a Shipping Company
While you could drive your motorcycle to your final destination, this means spending days on the road with little time for anything else. A safer and more convenient way of doing things is to hire a motorcycle transport company. Fortunately, there are many to choose from that specialize in only moving vehicles and nothing else. Motorcycle Shippers has great advice for choosing the right company.
Preparing Your Motorcycle
Once you’ve chosen a shipping company, it will be time to prepare your motorcycle for its long journey. Some of the most important steps in preparation include:
1. Remove Your Belongings
From aftermarket devices to your belongings in storage areas, everything must be removed. This includes saddlebags, even if they are already attached to your motorcycle.
2. Check Tires and Address Leaks
Tires should be properly inflated without any leaks, which may cause issues with safety during the shipment. Leaks in fluids should also be identified and addressed for the same reason.
3. Turn Off Alarm
If you have a special alarm installed on your bike, deactivate it before pickup. Harley Davidson has a great article on putting their brand bikes in transport mode.
4. Wash
Wash your bike, fold back the mirrors, and do a thorough check for damage. U Ship recommends taking notes on any existing scratches or dents. Taking photos with a timestamp is also encouraged.
5. Drain Fluids
The gas tank should be no more than 1/4 full before shipping day. Most companies will also ask that you drain all other fluids completely.
6. Copy Keys and Unlock Steering
Make a copy of your keys to give to the shipping company. The steering should also be unlocked to allow for loading and unloading.
7. Copy Maintenance Records
Some shipping companies will ask for copies of maintenance records to ensure they can safely move your bike. If you don’t have copies of this, you’ll have to speak with the shipper about alternative options.
8. Choose Pickup and Drop-off
According to Motorcycle Shippers, it’s important to have pickup and drop-off areas that are accessible by a trailer. If you don’t, then choose areas that are or work with the shipper to find a better option.
9. Review Your Contract
Before releasing your bike, review the contract, so you understand the process and rules.
10. Inspect Upon Arrival
Once your motorcycle has arrived, inspect it for any damage that wasn’t present when you left it. If there is, then use your photos to prove to the shipper the damaged occurred during transport.
Making Motorcycle Moving Easy
Shipping companies make it easy to ship your motorcycle across the country. In addition to saving you money, this means saving a considerable amount of time and energy. By using the checklist above, you’ll have peace of mind that the process goes smoothly.
